The Other Side

I've always been very interested in video projection. It's been around for a while now but I feel like it hasn't been used as much as I had always expected. It's a simple, easy to use tool that creates a massive impact. Putting video in places it's never been able to go before.

Here are a couple of examples of some next level projection marketing.

Projection from Drones, Creating a highly mobile version of projection marketing.

Virtual Mannequins create the possibility all sorts of new takes on the shopping mall experience.

Projection Marketing

What is content marketing?

It's the opposite of the traditional, forced ads. It's not a web banner, commercial, or bilboard. Content marketing is simply creating relevant and compelling content in a consistent fashion to a targeted buyer. It focuses on all stages of the buying process, from brand awareness to brand advocacy.

Here's some history;

The goals of content marketing are many, here's a list;

Build Brand awareness or Reinforcement - This is long term, authentic, organic, and actually works.

Lead conversion and Nurturing - Through content marketing you can actually encourage a potential customer to give up enough information to allow "Permission Marketing"

Customer Service - This is huge, when a company does not reply to its comments and concerns it comes off as rude and inauthentic, like there isn't actually a human being manning the other end of this thing.

Customer Loyalty & Retention

Customer Upsell

Passionate Subscribers - If you get here, you're definitely doing it right.

So whats the point?

Be Real, Show 'em what you're about, Be Genuine, and Interact.

Consumers want to interact with the brands they like. They are willing to reach out and follow those brands on all kinds of social media. They volunteer to be marketed to. Do it right and neither of you will regret it. As for what's right for you and your customer base, that's something you will have to decide.

WTF is Content Marketing?

The internet has always been social. These "emerging medias" have been around longer than most even know. It takes time for these things to pick up momentum. When I look at emerging medias I want to see something brand new. Things that have never before been possible. Of course integrating technology is crucial to creating new medias, but if that's where it starts and stops...

There is a ton of hype around social media right now but I think we're in for some changes. Many young people are rejecting social media and living their lives in reality vs digitally. No time for cameras, Using their eyes instead.

I Understand the importance of social media, It's a big part of what I do for a living, But when it starts to separate people instead of bring them together, people will begin to reject it. I think that social medias will become more direct and shift towards applications like KIK, a direct messenger. It's purpose will be communication, to bring people together, where they can put their phones away and actually interact.

I will be doing a series of posts on Emerging media as it relates to Advertising, over the next several weeks. I'll do damnedest to keep it away from social media, and bring into something tangible, things that actually exist.

Know your History

A Gap press release this week announced its plan to “celebrate individuality by Challenging the convention of dressing normal”. Their message to consumers? Dress Normal. That’s right, normal… I understand where they’re coming from, Being comfortable in your clothing allows the individual to let their personality be what expresses their individuality. Right? ‘Cause thats the normal way to express yourself. They also state that they understand that everyones version of normal is different. Normal isn’t one size fits all. They do seem to think that they encapsulate normal pretty well.

I can see how this approach might actually work for the Gap. It seems to be a pretty accurate description of their target demographic. Stephen Sunnucks, Gap Global president said “We were inspired by the bold and honest spirit of the millennial generation; their authenticity is what makes them stand apart in today’s complex world,” . The honesty works for me but the message doesn’t seem to be one to inspire the ones who inspired it. “Millennials” and “Hipsters” are two concepts I can’t seem to understand. They are umbrella terms that generalize groups of people who appear to be vaguely similar based on a few generic identifiers. A generation of super consumers, raised on technology, with an eye for inauthenticity. I doubt this campaign will do much in the way of inspiring millennials, I think they are a group of individuals capable of seeing through the seasonal ad campaigns, and see straight to the authenticity that makes a brand theirs, or their parents. To quote a friend of mine, Pete Townshend, “I hope I die before I get old, Talkin’ ‘bout my generation.”

SHARK WEEK!

This Southern Comfort X Shark Week ad had me rolling. I've yet to see a SoCo ad I don't like.

Last year's Shark week was watched by an average of 2.1 million views in prime time, with 29 million tuning in to the network at some point to see what all the hype was about. It was the most watched programming of ages 18-49, beating all other broadcasts that week. Shark Week is quickly becoming an advertising event to align with. A sort of Shark Super Bowl. A Super Bowl of Shark Soup, Extra Ads for me please.
